Rosie Casals & Pancho Gonzalez Kids Tennis Fiesta

Bulletin Update July 1, 2019

Rosie Casals Summer Kids Tennis Camps

I hope everybody is having a good summer and enjoying some vacation time.

I just wanted to give you and update on The Love & Love Tennis Foundation and what we have been up to with tennis and the kids.

Our tennis clinics with the Boys and Girls Clubs went on from January through the end of school in June. The Rosie Casals Tennis Camps have two camps running; one at Coachella Valley High School & the other at Palms Spring High School. Both of the Boys and Girls Club (Mecca & Palm Springs) had about 20 kids signed up and an additional 20 walk-in kids from Coachella Valley area.  We are excited to see the interest of the kids and parents in CV since they are usually not exposed to tennis. Thanks to Jay Samonte & Larry Islas present & past coach of the tennis team, the Love & Love Tennis Foundation has been able to organize the introductory Summer Camp at the High School that runs from June 10 – July 10. We hope to continue providing free instructions to the kids all year around especially during the school season.

The Love & Love Tennis Foundation is also sponsoring the Rattlesnake Tennis Academy kids Summer Tennis Camp June 17 – July 24 at Rancho Mirage High School organized by Owen McIntosh, Coach of the Girls Tennis Team from .

Upcoming Events: Rosie Casals & Pancho Gonzalez Kids Tennis Fiesta, September 28, 2019 at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens.

We will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and The Love & Love Tennis Foundation will once again be hosting about 120 kids from the Coachella Valley Unified School District Ases Program.  We have a full day scheduled,  tennis clinic in the morning, lunch followed by entertainment from the Youth Mariachi Band and Folklorico Dancers. To end the festivities there will be Pinatas for the kids to break which was a real big hit last year, because of the candy and goodies inside.

The Love & Love Tennis Foundation is  helping Jay and Coachella Valley High School raise money to resurface its’ 4 tennis courts. We appreciate any donations toward this campaign and any donations to The Love & Love Tennis Foundation. We are working hard to provide tennis to all kids in the valley and our goal to be able to continue these programs all year around so that kids can get free tennis lessons in their communities. We need more of everything especially volunteers to help instruct the kids.

The 5th Annual Rosie Casals Team Tennis Pro-Am & Jackie Cooper Award took place at beautiful Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert on Sunday, April 28, 2019. The morning was perfect and so was the temperature as volunteers showed up early in the morning to prepare for the days’ activities. The participants started showing up around 8:00am to check-in enjoying the Continental Breakfast, buying raffle tickets and checking out the Silent Auction before the tournament started.

Rosie and Tennis Director at IRCC Randy Berg welcomed the players and reviewed all the team tennis rules and format. Team photos were taken and then all teams were disbursed with their Pros to their designated courts.

After 2-hours of battle, two teams ended with the top scores; Team ASTA with Pro Andy Scorteanu accumulated 162 points and Team Golden Gaters with 154 points lead by Pro Jay Samonte. Congratulations to the two finalists! And to all the other Pros, Juniors and Amateurs, great job!

After the Pro-Am Prizes were awarded to the two finalists followed by a tasty BBQ lunch of hot dogs & hamburgers with all the trimmings, chicken and pulled pork with all the sides along with dessert.  Refreshments for relaxation were provided by the Presenting Sponsor RumChata and our Official Wine, The Larsen Projekt Wines.

Shortly after the Pro-Am and lunch, the Jackie Cooper Award Presentation took place with Rosie Casals welcoming everybody again and taking the time to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, Sportswoman staff and host-site Indian Ridge Country Club and its’ staff.

This years’ JACKIE COOPER AWARD recipient was local hometown Pro, Andy Scorteanu, who learned to play tennis at Ruth Hardy Park and the Tennis Club in Palm Springs. He was #1 in Southern California Juniors in 1996 and played for the Fresno Bulldogs. Andy was one of the top NCCA Collegiate players and went on to play on the ATP Tour in the early 2000’s. After his playing days, Andy became a Teaching Pro in the desert and is currently the Director of Racket Sports at Monterey Country Club where he also runs his junior tennis academy ASTA.

Andy has dedicated much of his life to promoting the growth of juniors in the valley having established his junior program at Mission Hills CC in 2004. He has successfully sent his top juniors to play at UCLA, San Luis Obispo and Boise State College. Today Andy’s academy is one of the most successful tennis academies in Southern California and sought after by many talented juniors. Of his current students, several are top-ranked in SoCal in the 12’s, 14’s and 16’s. (See Andy’s Bio)

To top off the day the Pro & Junior Shoot-Out took place right after lunch featuring local juniors in an all-doubles format. Team Fretz: Michael Cabacungan, Marcelo & Nico Calixto, Emunah & Shekinah Daffon, Caleb Kassinove, Mala Kumar and Charlotte Matterne. Congratulations to all of you!

Annalee Thurston Award Reception 2018

The first Love & Love Tennis Foundation Annalee Thurston Award fundraiser was a “Smashing” Success thanks to all of you who supported the reception by attending or sending in your donations.  It was a great evening with lots of wonderful moments and many Thank You’s from me personally to each and every one of you.  And those who participated in the “Live” Auction made it the most memorable evening.  Billie Jean stepped up to the plate to buy two of Cartoonist and Legend Lee Holly’s paintings, Chris & Martina auctioned off two hours of tennis and Gary Tolman and Jim Citrin stepped up and grabbed a chance to play with two incredible friends and Legends.  Chairman and President of the USTA and recipient of the Thurston Award, Katrina Adams took the podium to auction off her US Open President’s Package to tennis fan and friend Gary Tolman.  Needless to say in that 15 minute span the foundation raised about $45,000 to bring our gross total to over $80,000. Without a doubt the best ever and one I will have to work very hard to repeat in 2019 . . . I WILL CERTAINLY TRY!

It was a pleasure to have Tatiana Harvey as the first recipient of the Vicki Berner “Heart & Spirit” Award and to share her stories and dreams of her future goals and aspirations after she graduates from High School this summer.  We certainly wish her well and know she will be a success!

To Katrina Adams, this year’s Annalee Thurston Award Recipient and always our President, I thank you for your support and contributions to the game of tennis and all that you do.  I hope you will continue to serve the game and return next year for more of your auction “Magic”.  To my Presenting Sponsor RumChata, and the wonderful wine from Rodney Strong Vineyards, Dr. Raj Sinha, Desert Stemcell Project, all my advertisers, Tennis Channel, International Tennis Hall of Fame, USTA, WTT, Sally Ride Science, Joan Oloff Shoes, Billie Jean Eye Coach, Ginn & Topics, so much appreciationTo my Patrons and Friends; Gary & Barbara Tolman, Laura King-Pfaff, Tam O’Shaughnessy, Dave & Felicia DiJohn, Ilana Kloss, Tory Fretz and all of you who made our success possible . . . THANK YOU!  Peggy Michel and Desert Champions for allowing us to have such a great venue for our dinner and suite to view tennis, so many thanks for your continued generosity.

Annalee would be proud to know that she is still bringing us together to do good things in the desert!
